Publication Bias, 1916 Style

Whilst browsing Wikipedia, I came across a poignant early example of publication bias, the failure to make public scientific results that don't support a given hypothesis.

The Judenzählung was a census of the German military carried out in 1916, at the height of the First World War. It was designed to measure the number of Jewish soldiers in the army.

The background to this was the feeling, very powerful in Germany at that time, that the Jewish German minority were "unpatriotic" or "traitorous", and were dodging military service or avoiding front line combat.

The survey was completed, but the results were not published, apparently because they revealed that, contrary to popular belief, Jews were at least as likely as non-Jews to be serving in the army, and were overrepresented on the front lines as well. (Some of the data did emerge after the war, however, when they were criticized for being inaccurate by Jewish groups. 12,000 German Jews died in battle during the War.)

This is an exceptional example of publication bias, but in essence it's no different to what happens when academic or corporate researchers decide not to reveal data which they're not happy with, for whatever reason. The best-known culprits are pharmaceutical companies who often decline to publish data showing that their drugs don't work, but it's a problem that affects most of science, and Big Pharma are certainly not the only ones doing it.

One solution is to have scientific journals or websites dedicated to publishing "negative" results, and there are several, but this still relies on people choosing to reveal their data. It seems to me that, ultimately, the best way to combat publication bias is to require the pre-registration of studies, so that everyone knows in advance what research is being done, and "missing" results can be noticed.

Time with Dad

Tonight I get to go see my dad at work. I like to go to his concerts. I have lots of fun listening to the music. It is so magical. This morning before dad left, he brought me a new dress. I got it because it is our "Special" night out. My dad takes me to fun days 2 times a month.

Tonight we are going to go have dinner. Then go to my dad's concert. :) My dad let's me pick where we are going to go eat. I think I will pick a Mexican restaurant. It's my dad and I's favorite kind of food. :)

I'm just excited to get to spend time with my dad. I want to wear my new dress too. I think it will be lots of fun. I like to watch my dad play. Spending time with him is the best! C

TIRE O PÓ...SE PRECISAR...

Não leve a FAXINA TÃO A SÉRIO! Pense que a camada de pó vai proteger a madeira que está por baixo dela! Uma casa só vai virar um lar quando você for capaz de escrever "Eu te amo" sobre os móveis ! Antigamente eu gastava no mínimo 8 horas por semana para manter tudo bem limpo, caso "alguém aparecesse para visitar" - mas depois descobri que ninguém passa "por acaso" para visitar- todos estão muito ocupados passeando, se divertindo e aproveitando a vida! E agora, se alguém aparecer de repente? Não tenho que explicar a situação da minha casa a ninguém... ... as pessoas não estão interessadas em saber o que eu fiquei fazendo o dia todo enquanto elas passeavam, se divertiam e aproveitavam a vida... Caso você ainda não tenha percebido: A VIDA É CURTA ... APROVEITE-A!!! Tire o pó ... se precisar... Mas, não seria melhor pintar um quadro ou escrever uma carta, assar um bolo e lamber a colher suja de massa, plantar e regar umas sementinhas? Pese muito bem a diferença entre QUERER e PRECISAR! Tire o pó... se precisar... Mas você não terá muito tempo livre... para beber champanha, nadar na praia (ou na piscina), escalar montanhas, ouvir música e ler livros, cultivar os amigos e aproveitar a vida!! Tire o pó... se precisar... mas a vida continua lá fora, o sol iluminando os olhos, o vento agitando os cabelos, um floco de neve, as gotas da chuva caindo mansamente.... - Pense bem, este dia não voltará jamais !! Tire o pó... se precisar.... Mas não se esqueça que você, vai envelhecer e muita coisa não será mais tão fácil de fazer como agora... E quando você partir, como todos nós partiremos um dia, também vai virar pó!!! "Não é o que você juntou, e sim o que você espalhou que reflete como você viveu a sua vida." QUEM MANTÉM TUDO ORGANIZADO É PORQUE TEM PREGUIÇA DE PROCURAR AS COISAS!!! UMA MENSAGEM QUE NOS FAZEM, REFLETIR MUITO. EU TAMBÉM SOU, ASSIM AS VEZES. JÁ FUI BEM PIOR. ERA PERFECNIONISTA EM TUDO. MUITAS VEZES, DEIXEI DE SAIR DE CASA PARA FAZER A DITA FACHINA. E, NÃO GANHEI NADA COM ISSO. SÓ PERDI, UM TEMPO MELHOR. PODERIA TER AMADA MAIS, PASSEADO MAIS, PODERIA ENCONTRAR AMIGOS, E TER CURTIDO A VIDA, COM MUITO MAIS PRAZER. AINDA BEM, QUE MUITOS CONCEITOS, VÃO MUDANDO EM NOSSAS MENTES. AMADURECEMOS E VAMOS VENDO A VIDA, COM OUTROS OLHOS. COMEÇAMOS A ENXERGAR MAIS COM O CORAÇÃO. VAMOS APRENDENDO A NOS SEDUZIR PELA VIDA E SABER A PROVEITAR O MELHOR, QUE ELA, TEM PARA NOS OFERECER. ESTA MENSAGEM EU GANHEI. VEIO CONTRIBUIR MUITO. POIS AS VEZES DEIXAMOS ADORMECIDOS DENTRO DE NÓS ALGUNS VALORES, QUE PRECISAM SER ACORDADOS. ME AJUDOU A CONTINUAR E REFLETIR MAIS NA VIDA.
