Fundada em 1241, a cidade de Hanôver ("Hannover" em alemão) é a capital do Estado da Baixa Saxônia. Situada nas margens do rio Leine, a área metropolitana de Hanôver tem cerca de 1,1 milhão de habitantes.

Hannover de "cidade dos jardins", referindo-se aos jardins do Castelo de Herrenhausen, em estilo barroco.

A cidade de Hannover originou-se na Idade Média como um pequeno vilarejo na parte mais elevada do rio Leine (Hanover vem de "hon overe", ou "margem alta").Coberta de muito verde,Capital do estado da Baixa Saxônia (centro-oeste alemão), sede da maior feira industrial do mundo e da CeBIT, a grande mostra internacional de tecnologia da informação e da comunicação.

Quase completamente destruída pelos bombardeios dos aliados em 1943, durante a 2ª Guerra, possui muitas áreas verdes reconstruídas e é um importante centro de feiras comerciais. É a cidade em que nasceu o ex-chanceler alemão Gerhard Schröder.

Hannover revela uma arquitetura apurada em seu centro histórico, mas são seus jardins barrocos que ganham mais atenção dos turistas. Ainda na parte estética, deve-se visitar o Sprengel-Museum, um dos mais importantes museus de arte moderna de toda Europa.
